  18. (a) Introduction
  19.  
  20.     This is a patch file for Creative TextAssist (from Creative Labs,
  21.     Inc). It will patch older versions of TextAssist to the latest
  22.     version (v1.12).
  23.  
  24.     The following files are included with this patch:
  25.  
  26.     (i)   TAUPDATE.EXE - TextAssist Patch application program
  27.     (ii)  PATCH.EXE    - Used by TAUPDATE.EXE to patch files
  28.     (iii) TAWIN.RTP    - Patch for TextAssist Windows DLLs
  29.     (iv)  TA1T3.RTP    - Patch for TextAssist applications/libraries
  30.     (v)   TACSP.RTP    - Patch for TextAssist SB16/AWE32 driver
  31.     (vi)  README.TXT   - This file

  34. (b) Which version of TextAssist is patched?
  35.  
  36.     This patch will upgrade older version of TextAssist to 
  37.     version 1.12. If you have a later version of TextAssist 
  38.     (version 1.12 or greater), then you do not need this patch.
  39.  
  40.     There are several ways to check whether you have the old version
  41.     of TextAssist:
  42.  
  43.     (i) Your original TextAssist Program Disk has the following
  44.         disk ID code - TASS-STD-01 (Revision 1 or 2) or
  45.         SB16-TAS-01-ENG (Revision 3 or below), or
  46.  
  47.         Your CD-ROM has the following disk ID code - 
  48.         SBCD-STQ-01-EU5 (Revision 1)
  49.  
  50.     (ii) The file TAREADER.EXE in your TextAssist
  51.          directory is dated at or before 6/22/1994.
  52.  
  53.     Below are the file names, sizes, date & time stamps of all the
  54.     TextAssist software that is patched. After running TAUPDATE.EXE, 
  55.     please verify that the new "patched" TextAssist software in your
  56.     system matches those in the list:

  84. (c) How do I use this patch?
  85.  
  86.     First, make sure that you are in DOS. This patch should be run
  87.     under DOS, and not in Windows.
  88.  
  89.     You will need to run the program TAUPDATE.EXE to execute the
  90.     patch. TAUPDATE.EXE will prompt you for the full path to your
  91.     Sound Blaster, TextAssist, and Windows directories. Simply follow
  92.     the on-screen prompts and enter the correct directory paths, and 
  93.     TAUPDATE.EXE will take care of the rest!
  94.  
  95.     *** IMPORTANT ***
  96.  
  97.     In order to successfully perform the patch, TAUPDATE.EXE requires
  98.     all the necessary files - TA1T3.RTP, TAWIN.RTP, TACSP.RTP and 
  99.     PATCH.EXE - to be in the SAME directory as TAUPDATE.EXE.

  102. (d) What is the difference between the original TextAssist and the
  103.     patched version?
  104.  
  105.     The new patched version of TextAssist makes use of an improved
  106.     API, delivering better speech quality and future support
  107.     for foreign languages It provides better support for third-party 
  108.     software developers utilizing TextAssist's text-to-speech system
  109.     in their products, and other neat enhancements.
  110.

  112. (e) Will I encounter any side effects if I patch my older version of
  113.     TextAssist?
  114.  
  115.     Well, not really. Ok, there may be one *tiny* problem - to support all
  116.     the great new features mentioned in Part (d) above, we've had to 
  117.     change the way we store TextAssist voices. 
  118.  
  119.     All TextAssist voices (including any that you've created, using the
  120.     the TextAssist Control Panel) are saved in the file TAVOICE.DAT in
  121.     your TextAssist directory. Because of this change in the way we store
  122.     voices, any TAVOICE.DAT file created by the older version of the
  123.     TextAssist Control Panel cannot be recognized by the newer, patched
  124.     version of the TextAssist Control Panel.
  125.  
  126.     In fact, it's recommended that after patching your TextAssist software,
  127.     you should delete the TAVOICE.DAT file from your TextAssist directory.
  128.     The next time you launch the TextAssist Control Panel from Windows,
  129.     a fresh TAVOICE.DAT file will be created.
  130.

  132. (f) Limitations of the patch program.
  133.  
  134.     The patch application program (TAUPDATE.EXE) will patch the FIRST
  135.     occurrence of the files that it is searching for. Therefore, if you
  136.     have two copies of the same file in your hard disk, it will only 
  137.     patch the first copy that it finds.
  138.  
  139.     For this reason, you must be very careful in how you specify the
  140.     path for the TAUPDATE.EXE program to search. If you follow the 
  141.     examples given in this ReadMe file, then you should not have any 
  142.     problems with successfully patching your TextAssist software.
